After recession in 2008-2009, Angola’s economy is performing strongly, with anticipated real GDP growth at 5-6% over 2014-2020, which is above the Sub-Saharan average. Although Angola remains highly dependent on oil revenue, the government’s efforts to foster economic diversification and job creation are starting to take form, adding to economic growth and increasing the number of local and international companies. Developing construction, telecommunications, banking and other sectors is facilitating growth in employment and income, which in turn accelerates consumption.

Personal consumption expenditure is projected to grow by a CAGR of 11% over 2014-2020.
Angola has one of the biggest and fastest growing populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over 22,5 million people lived in the country in 2015, with the majority being below 20 years old and living in urban areas – primarily the capital city Luanda. The population is expected to reach 26 million by 2020 due to the high birth rate, improving healthcare and living conditions.

The Angolan middle class is increasingly able to afford a growing range of essential products, such as food and beverages, and demand for non-essential items is also expected to increase. In the next five years, Euromonitor International expects to see the fastest growth in tissue and hygiene (25% CAGR), home care (21% CAGR) and beauty and personal care (18% CAGR). For example, middle class consumers are gradually substituting bar soap with specialised products, such as laundry detergents, dishwashing and shower gel.
